Walanga Muru Tutoring Program
The Walanga Muru Tutoring Program is offered to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at Macquarie University to help increase educational outcomes. The program provides both undergraduate and postgraduate students access to one-on-one tutors across all Macquarie faculties.
Requirements
Tutors must be qualified or working towards qualifications or have relevant industry experience. Formal qualifications from other universities are also considered.
Applicants must feel confident in delivering high-level academic assistance and be able to show knowledge of and encouragement to people from diverse cultures, learning abilities, genders, and differing age groups.
Current Macquarie University students may apply if they:
- In their third year or above.
- Able to show evidence of sound academic progress (75 or above in the unit they wish to tutor and generally sound academic performance).
As this is a casual position, we cannot guarantee hours. If you are appointed and assigned a student, we cannot guarantee your services will be utilised by the student.
Roles
Academic Tutor
The tutoring role takes two forms, being an individual unit tutor based on unit content, or a general tutor that supports overall university success. Unit specific tutors should understand and be confident with course content and assessment task requirements. General tutors should have a wider industry, professional, or tertiary knowledge that will assist students in developing their academic skills in any unit within their field. General tutors will engage in tasks such as proof reading, time management and improving other academic skills across a student's units.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide one-on-one tutoring to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students while supporting their academic needs.
- Assist students with academic and learning skills development through tutoring and guidance.
- Work with Academic Engagement Coordinators to ensure student success.
First Year Advisor
The First Year Advisor (FYA) role combines the responsibilities of a tutor, with mentoring in order to guide and nurture a first-year students' journey at Macquarie University. A FYA should equip a first-year student with the necessary tools and knowledge required to succeed in their first year of study such as navigating university systems, developing academic literacy skills, understanding foundational content knowledge.
Key Responsibilities:
- Be an advisor to a first year Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander University student.
- Tutor Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students in their academic work and mentor them through their first year of University.
- Work closely with Walanga Muru's Academic Engagement Coordinators to ensure students' well-being, academic progression and success.
- Promote a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards University.
